Special and non-standard profiles are part of sheet-metal working at MICHELFELDER Edelstahltechnik GmbH. Along with the usual materials such as stainless steel, copper and steel, high-grade ones e.g. gold, silver and titanium are also processed in the manufacturing of thin-walled special profiles. The use of certain, defined-dimensioned materials is often required particularly for those visible profiles (e.g. in the bathroom, living area, automotive world). No standard profiles are, as a rule, available on the market.
Ultra-precision: Pulsed laser welding
For particular requirements, MICHELFELDER provides a special solution in sheet-metal working – namely pulsed laser welding. It is optimally suited, for instance, for producing thin-walled special profiles, medical instruments and micro component parts. Laser welding with pulsed Nd-YAG solid-state lasers involves a focused laser beam on a machine devised for this purpose being applied in short pulses (ON-OFF cycles) at 1-100 Hz to the workpiece. This permits brief cooling after each pulse. In this way – depending on pulse duration per time unit – only a fraction of the heat or energy which a CW or continuous beam laser would generate under comparable operations gets into the component. Benefits from pulsed lasing are minor thermal warping, slender, fine welds and a high degree of process reliability and reproducibility under batch production conditions.
Minor thermal input, no warping, little re-finishing
The laser welding automation line (laser welding robots) opens up new opportunities and business fields. This ultra-modern unit is mainly used for welding components which – under high speeds – need to be joined with a slender weld form and with little thermal warping. A striking feature of laser welding is that all seam geometries can be produced (butt, overlapping and fillet welds).
